MTR @ Lalbaugh Bangalore ; #RestaurantReview

Rava Idli
It was a usual Sunday with a twist, when I and my other two buddies planned to have our Sunday breakfast a little earlier than usual. As soon as the plan was finalized, I knew where we had to be for a super-awesome morning.
I had been reminded by the Bangalorites about the love they had for MTR and how it had been the most traditional, inherited trademark of Bangalore. And so my list had the name “MTR Bangalore” since a long time now, and it was time to strike it off with an experience. We woke up, brushed and just ran straight to the oldest and the best of all outlets of MTR in Bangalore. The one situated at ‘14, Lal Bagh Road, Near Basavangudi, Bangalore’

Sundays at MTR is a crowdy affair! All the foodies seem to just get up and dedicate themselves to their love for food, the South-Indian delicacy and complete their morning walks with the perfect breakfast. Yes the crowd mainly consisted of people who were returning from their morning walks, or a group of friends who were planning their Sundays and some families who had their morning outs. And the waiting list was a long one, It took us almost an hour to get our table. (Tip: Run at 7 a.m.)

MTR Entrance
Concept: MTR is a brand in India, well known for its ready-to-cook and ready-to-eat packaged food and spices. But before it became MTR the brand, it was ‘Mavalli Tiffin Room’ in Bangalore’s Lalbaugh. It’s an old place which greets you with a big long board of menu on its entrance. The place is all about finding a place, binging on your delight and coming out with happiness.

Waiting Lounge
Ambience: Being the oldest of all the place is built in old style, the tables for four, plastic chairs and old leather sofas. The waiters are dressed in whites with red belts around their bellies and also sometimes wearing red pagdis. The lights are basic and antique. The waiting lounge is surrounded with a lot of old world posters and certificates of excellence earned throughout the journey.

Food: When its MTR, Rava Idli is a must. The Rava Idli (made of suji or semolina mixed with coriander leaves, roasted cashew, curry leaves and mustard seeds) is a DO TRY DELIGHT of Bangalore and MTR is the temple of it. Comes with a small serving of ghee and Sago, along with the traditional Coconut chutney, it’s bound to give your taste buds a joy ride. Then there are other must orders like:

Masala Dosa
Masala Dosa - The usual masala dosa with a ghee topping and the Sago which is a never-tasted-before kind of taste.

Bisibele Bhath - This was my friend’s favorite, as she had been here before. An assortment of vegetables, curry leaves, lentils, nutmeg and tamarind pulp carefully tossed with rice, giving it a yummy experience. I loved it.

Khara Bhath
Khara Bhath – Another Suji delight cooked with spices and roasted cashews, which is a favourite of visitors.

Kesari Bhath – A sweet porridge of semolina and vermicelli, made with ghee and flavored with kesar, cashews and raisins. It’s a perfect way to end the visit.

Drinks: The house does not have much in the drink section apart from the two very famous ones, which aptly compensates for the others.

Fruit Mixture – A mix of MTR special American Ice-cream and mixed fruits, topped with a subtle flavor of almond.

Filter Kaapi
Filter kaapi – The house is known for freshly grounded coffee beans and making the purest form of coffee. The kind of coffee that touches the senses and travels to heart!

Service:  The service is okayish, but given the number of footfalls, they do a rather good job.

Plating: They use the steel and plastic plates to serve and it keeps their traditional style intact.

Price: Aptly Or should we say, better priced compared to other food joints serving South-Indian Delicacy.

MyPlateReview Recommends: A hearty breakfast in MTR on Sundays or may be evening snacks on anyday. A MUST VISIT in Bangalore, to relish the authentic South Indian Food soul. Rava Idli, Filter Kaapi and the Bhaths are a Must try. DO NOT ORDER Dahi Vada.
