No trip in
Delhi is complete without a Food Haul at Purani Dilli. I have always followed a
schedule where I dedicate a day or two of my stay in Delhi to food hauling here.
From Chhole bhature to Aloo Chaat, hot piping jalebis to bread chillas, garma-garam paranthe and chilling kulfis, even the diced fruit plates taste freshness here. Purani Dilli is filled with shops and stalls that have been serving their best of dishes since generations here. And Paranthewali gali or “the lane of paranthas” is nothing less than a paradise for food lovers.

Paranthewali Gali |
Parathewali
Gali is one of the many lanes in the crowdy Chandni Chowk area of Purani Dilli
and is kind of hidden amongst sari shops. The place is always overcrowded with
rickshaws and cycles, and there is always a big crowd of women out for their
wedding shopping. So spotting the right lane is kind of difficult. I would
advise you to take a metro to Chandni Chowk Metro Station or an Auto if you are
from nearby areas. Ask the Autowala to drop you right in front of the lane.
They only charge within Rs.100/- for the nearby areas.
In the older
days, paranthewali gali was a street known for its number of shops which sell hot
steaming paranthas. But as time passed, many sellers migrated to different
areas and now they are just few in numbers. These shops have been into business
since the early 1870s and have been passed on to generations. My favorite
amongst the Paranthewala shops is the “Parawthewala by Pt. Kanhaiyalal
Durgaprasad Dixit (Since 1875)”
Ambience:
The shop is smaller than a medium sized bedroom, full of small benches and
chairs. At first the place might look a little shabby, unhygienic or clumsy, but
for me it’s a-must-food-experience. The paranthas are made right on the
entrance and you can actually see them stuffing the paranthas and frying them
live in big kadhaai. They have a large box with different sections for different stuffing and make the paranthas according to the order. Although the sitting area is too small for a well-built person to fit in,
but the taste of ghee-laden paranthas is one of its kind. The walls are covered
with a big board with the shop’s name, menus showing the variety of paranthas
available and pictures of celebrities who had visited the place in the past.
Food: There
is a big menu with almost 40 types of paranthas, all at the same price. From
the usual Aloo, Pyaaz, Gobi and Paneer to extraordinary Bhindi, Karela, Mirchi
and even Rabdi parantha, they serve it all. They serve you a thali comprising
of Aloo Sabzi, Pumpkin Sabzi, Banana Saunth Chutney, Green Chutney, Baingan
Bharta and Mixed Achaar. With every plate a minimum of 2 paranthas are to be ordered
of your choice. As it was two of us, we tasted 4 paranthas. We decided to go
for the usual Paneer & Gobi (Cabbage) and the unusual Mirchi (Chilli) and Karela
(Bitter Guard).
Drink: They
used to serve Lassi in Kulhad earlier, but now these have been replaced with
paper glasses. They only serve Lassi in Sweet and Salty variants and nothing
goes better with Paranthas like Lassi. So yeah! We ordered a glass of Lassi for
both of us.
Service: The
attendants are rather fast people with almost coming right behind you to
attend. They make you find a place and take your order quickly too. No sooner
you place your order your thali arrives with the accompaniments and the
paranthas follow within 5 minutes. No charges on extra sabzi.
Plating: A thali with sections filled with
sabzis. They go by the traditional way of serving in steel thalis.
Price: Quite
cheap for a breakfast or lunch that makes your tummy too full to have anything else.
MyPlateReview
Recommends: MUST-TRY for the food lovers and everyone else too. Go for the
regular gobi parantha and even Papad parantha is delicious.
