Chilly Tofu Recipe using Tofu from Mooz Formaggio ; #ProductReview

Hello people! I hope you are doing good and loving the food culture as much as I do. If you have been following me you would know that Mooz Formaggio had sent me a big sample to test, try and let the world know the quality and taste of their products.

I truly have been into trying my recipes using the samples they sent me over.
So yes I tried the Chilli Tofu recipe using the Mooz Plain Tofu because Tofu is one such ingredient which did not impress me much and I thought of putting it under my knife first! And it did not disappoint me!

How was it! : Well the Tofu came in a plastic packaging which was air tight and looked almost like paneer. As soon as I opened it, the tofu felt like a rich slice of spong holding a lot of water in it. It was slightly yellowish white in colour and as soon as I squeezed it lots of water came pouring out. I was using tofu as an ingresdient for the first time so had to ask a few people on what the best kind of raw Tofu feels like and yes I was holding the right piece.

About cooking, all you have to do is clean the Tofu first! Just boil some water in a bowl and dip the Tofu in it for almost 5 minutes. The tofu gets cleaned from within and now you can squeeze all the water out to use it the way you want. I chose to dip it in Cornflour and then deep fry it until the each piece had a brownish tinge at the corners.

Today I am going to make Chilly Tofu which is a Indo-Chinese dish and brings the delicious mix of Chinese cooking into Indian ingredients. The dish has a saucy gravy with 80% cooked veggies which gives its optimum taste and can be paired with Chinese fried rice, noodles or any form of rice made in the Indian household. The dish is somewhat on the tangy and chilly side and would give the same taste. Now let’s go to the Chilly Tofu recipe!

Ingredients

Tofu – 200 grams (cleaned and cut into cubes)
Capsicum – 2 cut into cubes
Tomato – 2 cut into cubes
Onions – 2 cut into cubes
Garlic – 1 tbsp paste
Tomato Sauce – 2 tbsp
Green chilli sauce – 1 tbsp
Soya sauce – ½ tbsp
Vinegar – 1 tbsp
Green Chillies – 1 chopped
Cornflour – 3 tbsp
Butter – 3 tbsp
Salt  to taste
Sugar 1 tsp
Black pepper to taste

Method

  1. Chilly Tofu does not require much of spices as most of it gets covered with the sauces. Mix the 3 sauces and Vinegar in a bowl and keep aside.
  2. Take a small bowl and mic 3 tbsp cornflour with very little water to make a thick paste of it. You have to dip the Tofu cubes into it and then deep fry them until they have brownish tinge to their corners. Take out and strain.
  3. Now take a deep pan and add the butter to it. Saute garlic, onion and capsicum into it for almost 2 minutes in high flame.
  4. Lower the flame and add tomatoes and keep frying it until the veggies turn soft. Now add salt according to your taste and wait for the veggies to cook.
  5. As you stir through the veggies constantly, keep in mind that you just have to cook them 80%
  6. Now add the sauce mixture and black pepper to it and keep stirring. Also add 1 cup water.
  7. The remaining of the cornflour starch has to be used in thickening of the Chilly Tofu gravy and so pour 1 tbsp of the cornflour starch and stir the gravy and watch if it turns thick. Else add one more.
  8. You only need a thicker consistency then water and don’t want to turn it hard. So 2 tbsp of cornflour starch will do the trick.
  9. You can add 1 tsp sugar if you think the dish is a lot tangy. Sugar will neutralize the tanginess.
  10. Now add the fried tofu and mix well. Garnish with coriander leaves or spring onions.

Chilly Tofu tastes a little tangy, sweet and with a lot of spice and the veggies complement them with the flavours. The Tofu will have a soft and spongy neutral taste to complement the spicy gravy.
