Mumbai ki Gola Chuski - My Plate Review

Pick it up, slurp, slurp, slurp! … and let the world be!

Gola or chuski or Jhande wala icecream as I so fondly called is an inherited part of Mumbai and is known for its unique flavor and style. Being running as a street side ice-cream since ages now, it has brought craze not only for the Mumbaikars but also for the whole of India.
We now have these vendors and also ice-cream joints serving the Mumbai-ki-chuski everywhere in India now. “Garmi-Sardi-Baarish, ye sab time chalts hai”

We love the delightful kala khatta and oh the masalas on top of it. The thanda feeling in our hands with the colourful sight and peppiness of the masalas makes for a treat in any season. Probably one of the best Indian ice-creams available!

Well Gola chuski was not much appreciated by people earlier because of the possibility of ice being made of unhygienic water. Also there are synthetic flavours used in the making of gola. But the love and fun that we share while having gola has outdone the skepticism! And indeed a large portion of the crowd enjoys gola without any doubts. There are even branded stores oming up ith mineral water ice cubes and hygienic methods to make the gola and doing well too like the “Go Gola” joint we find in Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi now!

Gola chuski has been one of my favourites and a must try if you are in Mumbai. They crush the ice in a skraper and take out the ice flakes to make a shape into the glass. They then dig a stick probably sometimes made of wood or plastic and then add the desired flavours which can range from kala khatta, rose, khus, orange, pineapple, saffron, Black currant, green apple etc. And the delightful touch comes when they add a dash of lemon and lots of masala over it for the added zing!

Mumbai ki khaasiyat is that they have added innovation to the Gola Chuski and brought it to another level altogether. With Rabri chuski, falooda chuski, chocolate and even mithai chuski they have made us go WOW with their servings! The most practical example of it is achieved when you go to Juhu Chowpati or even Chowpati near Marine drive. There is a range of or I would say almost a Gola-fair going all round the year for your savourings!

Why do late? Just watch the affair here and rush to the nearest place possible to put your tongue at work!
